The objective of this study was to investigate the direct and indirect association of the variables age, anxiety, depression, eating disorder, and obesity in perception with body image among university students. This is an epidemiological, quantitative, descriptive, and analytical cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 364 academics in the health area of a Private Higher Education Institution in the city of Montes Claros, north of Minas Gerais. A structural equation model via path analysis was used to assess interrelationships. It was observed that obesity (β=0.27, p < 0.001), eating disorders (β=0.43, p < 0.001), and depression (β=0.13, p < 0.001) have a direct and significant effect on the body image of university students. Age and anxiety exert indirect effects on body image, mediated by obesity and depression. Furthermore, obesity and depression also have indirect effects on body image, mediated by eating disorders. The results of this study emphasize the importance of developing integrated models capable of considering direct and indirect relationships, with the purpose of developing public policies of prevention and treatment, simultaneously addressing issues related to obesity, eating and psychological disorders.
