Living with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) in adolescence can be characterized as a stressful experience, so that the meaning attributed to the disease can have an impact on adherence to treatment. The aim was to analyze the meanings that adolescents with DM1 attribute to the disease through qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research, in which 20 adolescents with DM1 participated. Data were collected through a sociodemographic questionnaire and Drawing-Writing and Drawing-Telling, and studied using thematic analysis. Two categories emerged: 1) Person without diabetes and 2) Person with diabetes, with their respective subcategories and analysis elements. The drawings and reports highlighted adaptation to changes in lifestyle, time since diagnosis, other people's perception of adolescents and family involvement in the diet. The importance of knowing the meanings attributed by adolescents to DM1 is highlighted so that intervention strategies can be adjusted to the needs of this population.
