Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to examine the duration and quality of sleep of self-declared white or black and female or male Brazilian university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: 722 Brazilian university students answered an online questionnaire with questions related to their sociodemographic characteristics, as well as questions about sleep duration and quality, as well as sleep disorders. Results: The frequency of short sleep decreased by 7% during the pandemic, while the frequency of poor sleep increased by 13%. 76.18% of participants reported having at least one sleep disorder. Discussion: We found higher rates of sleep disorders than in previous studies. The results suggest that the increase in sleep duration does not imply an increase in sleep quality. The exclusive use of self-report measures and the underrepresentation of black people and men are limitations of this study. Conclusions: Measures to promote sleep quality should be a priority in dealing with the adverse effects of the pandemic in the university population.
